Thanks Graham! I do believe it has something to do with the tech stack too... or just how the desktop app has been developed. The iOS app seems way more responsive in search results and similar actions, which might mean Apple Music on the desktop is still lugging around legacy code from the iTunes days. No idea if that's right, but that's how it feels...
